Kup Day 2008 Report.
99 was the driving force behind a fundraising event held on November 4 2008 that raised $21 000 for the Project K coffers in Hawkes Bay. These funds will go directly to the Hawkes Bay branch of Project K - the charity that maximises youth potential.
The inaugral Kup Day Melbourne Cup event held at the Hawkes Bay Opera House, saw 250 guests enjoy a taste of the style and glamour of a day at Flemington's biggest race in Australasia.
The tone of the event was set by colourful jockeys, fashion in the field contests, on site betting with the TAB and a magnificent big screen for the race. The exciting photo finnish to the race was followed by an auction of interesting and affordable items with all funds directly benefiting the charity.
Sophie Stewart of 99 co-ordinated a team of hard working organisers behind the scenes of the relaxed yet stylish evening.
Finding the right sponsors for such events is a challenge, and the support of generous local businesses - Grow HR, ABC Software, No. 9, Degas, The Old Church Restaurant, Thompsons Suits, Craggy Range Wines, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Need a Nerd, Stewart Financial Group, Yummy Fruit Company, Gemco, Darrin McCormack of Mike Pero, Hastings Pak n Save, Willis Toomey Robinson, Cottages NZ and the Radio Network was pivotal to the success of the event.
This years Project K students from Havelock High School were involved too, helping on the night making it a real community affair.
Local press, Hawkes Bay Today featured a photograph of the event the following day on its front page, showing there is an appetite in the local community for a celebration of the Melbourne Cup, and 99 will do its best to ensure that Kup Day has a place in the Hawkes Bay calendar in the years to come.
